laser pegs anyone?

just stumbled on these while browsing amazon and wondered if any of our members have an experience with them?

essentially they appear to be clear or tinted translucent bricks compatible with lego, a power base and connectors which light up in an assortment of colors.

when i first saw the power base, i immediately though... lego christmas display. but furthur research leaves me thinking the power base on its own wouldnt be much good for transferring light, and then it wouldnt be different colors.

Hey Sub,

I found those last year and did get some, they are quite cool, but have a couple of drawbacks. First is cost, they are not cheap, second is I wouldn't say they are compatible with Lego as although you can use lego with them invariably they will block the light transmission. The way they work is 'some' pegs/blocks are illuminated and this then gets transmitted through the other clear components. They do work and are pretty cool in their own right, whether they would work for christmas displays really depends on your budget and how many you want Smile

thanks, nigel.

what i was thinking would be inside lego houses, so the light would come through the windows. is the light box just plain white and then the add on pegs bring different colors? the lego wouldnt be directly built on to the laser peg kits. more just the laser pegs would be set inside the houses.

can the add on pegs be built together without the other bricks? my houses dont tend to have a large amount of space inside, and windows are on different levels. i also have an ice skating pond that i wouldnt mind lighting up too.

pic 3 on this link shows the houses best, but theres another 2 or 3 been added since then http://sunsthomasandfriends.weebly.com/2...-show.html

all up i would guess i would need about 8 right now, but may get one just to see and use that under the skating pond.

I'll dig the set out and have a check again, I know at the time I bought it I wasn't particularly well so I didn't really give it the attention it probably deserves. So I'll do that and get back to you with some answers.

However you are aware that Lego themselves actually make some 'light' bricks? These are often included with the limited edition christmas buildings they bring out each year.

There are also some third party light bricks, I remember finding them myself a few years back when I was looking for something similar, although I have to admit I didn't buy any at the time as they seemed quite expensive.

However what I did do was experiment with some of the strip LED's you can buy off eBay etc... Basically they come as a reel of LED's of various types/colours (depends what you buy) which include all the requisite resistors etc... built into the strip. So you just solder a power wire onto the relevant pads and then connect them to a power source (say a 9v battery). The other nice thing is you can literally just cut the strip to the length you want, its all very simple and very effective and to add the final icing the strips are self adhesive Smile

Here's an example of a seller in the UK but you can find many sellers across the world;

cheers, nigel.

i actually have some LED strips that i bought from walmart a few years ago. havent done anything with them yet, but must get on to it, as it would be cheaper than buying laser pegs. i do wonder about spreading the color through the windows though, given the strips are flat.

the lego light bricks are quite ineffective ive found. one color and a button that must be held down. i actually removed most of mine due to little fingers finding them and then constantly fiddling, risking damage to the buildings. not ideal when displaying outside near a lawn, lol.

i have seen the one brand of light brix, as you say quite expensive, but would work well i think.

i really must learn basic electronics. would love to be able to wire up small LEDs myself.
