blairs OO scale island of sodor

4 Replies, 5840 Views

this weekend just past, i spent with my friend blair, helping babysit his layout at a model railway show in the next town. i also help with dismantling and re-construction. it breaks down into the 3 sections, which fit into a custom frame in the back of his pick up truck.

it is a mix of hornby and bachmann engines, and also some customs that he created. he has every character released, and the rolling stock has outgrown the layout.
it is dual sided, with each side representing a different part of the island. essentially, it is based on the original stories, and is hugely popular with both children and adults.
it can run 3 trains at one time, usually a freight on the outside, passenger express on the inside of that, and a smaller set up on the top track. the vehicles are the diecast take n play releases.

more information at his website, and also a look at his other rail projects.

"The vehicles are the diecast take n play releases."

Caroline doesn't exist in Take Along/Take-N-Play. Could it be Ertl?
dont know. the bulk are take n play, so i assumed they all were. when doing public displays, theres no time to check under them, just get them out as quick as possible before the doors open.

Very cool layout and big. I have always admired those like Sunhuntin and friend who go to all the work of setting these portable layouts up and take them down simply for the enjoyment of the viewing public.

I particularly like the layout pictured on his web site titled "Back Country NZ". The outdoor, low angled, horizontal photos make the layouts landscape blend in with the actual landscape making it look real.
Thanks for sharing with us Sunhuntin.
