I love opening these old engines, as you never know what colors the gears will be. Most are white, but i have seen green, yellow, red and blue, even pink!

Just one brass gear and the rest are plastic?

Brass gear on the motor shaft, rest plastic.

Wonder if thats the original or someone replaced it? I would think that metal against plastic would increase wear but I could be wrong.

After watching a couple videos of these vintage trains I like how, in addition to the side cogs on the engines drive wheels assisting it up  sloped rails, it also helps it to smoothly descend those slopes and not dart down like some of the more modern engines do.

I seem to recall many of mine having brass on the motor as well. Been a long time since i opened one, so my memory could be off.

In Sunhuntins pictorial we can see that there was a mix of gears. Wonder if it was a certain time, reason or different supplier that lead to the changes. In the 3 pictures we see the all white plastic gear box, a gear box with the motor gear in brass and one showing the multi colors. I wonder if the plastic itself is different with each color.
