Thanks Warts I love the real stories of these trains.

The Cassiopeia still runs.
JR West are looking in to using the coaches for a seasonal charter train and there will of course be the new luxury sleeper 'Twilight Express Mizukaze' which has been mentioned before. Also JR East will be introducing their own 'Toran suiito Shiki-Shima' sleeper train.
Thanks for the info Warts. Because of your info I did a little research and the artists impression of the Toran suiito Shiki-Shima' sleeper train is quite space agey. "The train will use a new "EDC" hybrid propulsion system, enabling the train to operate as an electric multiple unit under overhead electric wires, or use two diesel generators in the end cars to power the train's traction motors on non-electrified routes" maybe like the Hybrid Diesel in the Mizukaze. Its supposed to be running in 2017 like the Twilight Express Mizukaze at least thats what it say here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_Suite_Shiki-shima
