The fact Fisher Price got rid of the road system and left only the motorised engines could've perhaps hinted why he's the same size and runs on rails (unlike when TOMY remade Bertie as an engine after they followed suit).

Oddly enough, there was actually an episode called "Race to the Rescue" where he tries to go off-rail, but he wobbles uncontrollably since he's used to track (though he does eventually regain confidence). Even then, he still runs almost strictly on rails except for maneuvers.

Regarding hi-rail fire engines in the Diabolo link: The above image is a 3D concept, but they do exist. One of numerous hi-rail conversions by German company Zweiweg for literally all types of lorries (and pickups/vans/construction equipment). The Ōigawa Railway sure missed a big opportunity with their Flynn replica.

I don't know if anyone noticed but there is a variation of thomas in that set with his eyes looking to the left

I did notice Thomas's face and had to quickly check out if Muddy had him. I don't know if its the exact Thomas that came in that Flynn set but sure enough, Muddy has that expression at about the 3:10 minute mark of his "Complete Thomas Face Variation" video.

There are actually 3 FisherPrice versions on Flynn...
1. Talking Flynn
2. Fiery Flynn Greatest Moments: SSRC paper stickers on both doors w/ slightly different pinstripes on the front end, shiny finish to diamond plate cab top, dull gloss face and Standard speed
3. Cranky & Flynn Save the Day set: Painted on SSRC door decals, slightly different pinstripes on front end, higher gloss face, matte finish to diamond plate cab top, with increased speed.

Thanks Muddy Smile

Do you own the Plarail set with Thomas and the special road to rail switches?

For what it's worth I have the Plarail set loose as well as an extra pair of the switches, but they're still waiting to be shipped from Japan
I have a website where I have been writing about and photographing many of the sets and pieces that I find interesting.

No Super that’s one that I still haven’t picked up yet...
I’m pretty sure that I have the Thomas, and that there are no differences between the Flynn and the other two Plarail releases, so I just never got it...but now I will have to take a closer look and maybe get one.

I am having a heck of a time finding a video of Talking Flynn that shows him running on the track. I have 2 of them here that needed repairs and I got them to work but they aren't very fast. Might anyone know of a video please?
