Is one faster than the other, tender against engine only? Just curious to see if even though both are running there still is the tender pushing the engine or the engine pulling the tender somewhat.

Well Super that was an interesting experiment...
The Fisher Price Hank runs nearly the exact same speed as his HitToys tender, EXCEPT the tender runs slightly faster on the grey Trackmaster tracks, and the engine runs way faster on the blue Tomy tracks!!
The tender pulls away and separates from the engine on the Trackmaster line but the gap is quickly closed as soon as they are on the blue!! Weird.

That is weird but it at least confirms that they were working together and one would take the lead where necessary...very cool and neat experiment. I know the tender motor is a flat drive is TM Hanks the same?

Yes, it is. The Fisher Price Hank was made during the time when almost all the engines had the flat type (somewhat like today). This means what you were seeing was essentially two flat type units working together, one pushing the one that's pulling it.
