How To Replace a Split/Stripped Axle Gear

35 Replies, 50844 Views

If they are like the 5mm ones I have don't throw them out as I have found they still work in some trains as long as they are placed on the axle in the right position. And there are a few trains that use these bit larger gears but I can't remember which manufacturer I found those to be on. I have found that in the "Junk" bulk purchases that I have bought, in most cases the reason a train is declared junk is that the axle cog is split from children hold the train still while it is in the on position, otherwise those train are in fine condition.

Yeah I needed these too as I do have some that need this size. I may try and sand them down a hair and see how that looks.

Well still looking for the 4mm. I found this listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231240221828?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT
Which when I asked the seller they said the thickness is 4.55mm. Since I do not have a set of calipers, going to get a pair this weekend. I did the penny trick. A penny is supposed to be 1mm thick. So in measuring this way it seems the smaller gear, the one I need is 3 pennies thick. The larger gear is around 4 pennies thick. I don't get it. I know this is not exact, but I can't seem to find the right ones. I was thinking about trying the ones above, but fear they may be the same as the ones I already received that are too big.

Anyone have any good leads on the smaller size? Again this would be for the TnA range of drive cogs. But these seem to fit several of the Plarail/Tomy japaneese style engines too.

I have never gotten around to search through the parts on the Tamiya web site as they are the ones that sell the motors for our trains and the R/C & 4WD cars. I would guess they have gears too. http://www.tamiyausa.com/ I wonder if there are other Online R/C car sites that have parts and gears for that Hobby that might fit the needs.

Still no luck.. But on a side note, I finally decided to get some materials to make silicone molds and some casting resin. I am going to see how it may work to make the gear. If it works out I may be able to produce them myself, although probably not in a mass quantity, unless I make a really large mold. I was also going to try and mold some snow plow attachments. Smile

We will see how it goes.

Will making them yourself provide an inner axle hole or will you have to drill that out after?

May need to drill them, probably a tad smaller than actual, or maybe leave an insert in the mold when creating it. I will have to play around with it to see what is best. Probably drilling it since it is so small.

Well, good news and bad news.

Bad news: Undecided
I received my mold making stuff. While the molds turned out pretty good, the resin I do not think is going to work. The material was just too soft. I will however be able to use the resin for other parts. I may still try the gear if I get a chance but probably not.

Good news Wink
I should have done this to begin with as it was much less painful and easy to do. Basically I made a "jig" and sanded down the 5mm gear to be closer to 4mm. They seem to match up quite well with the existing 4mm gear I had. Now I need to press one on and make sure it works.

I made about 5 of them so far. If they work out out I will try and post a tutorial.

Cool, look forward to it.

Has anyone ever seen one of these or know what they may be called and where to get one? I saw this in a listing on Jauce for a lot of 12t 5mm gears. This is very cool and would be very helpful.
